How much of your identity belongs on your website?

Hi Reader,

If you’re a minority-owned business, have you ever wondered: “How should I showcase my diversity in our marketing?”

I believe you should always put a little “you” into your business’s online presence. Not only do you owe it to yourself—but doing so can help support visibility for those who share your identity. 🌟

Of course, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.

Maybe your diversity naturally shows up in your marketing, and you rally around causes that support your community, but it’s not a central message.

Alternatively, maybe you come out of the gates singing that message loud and proud.

The decision boils down to a few questions:

  • Are you trying to attract clients who prioritize hiring diverse businesses?
  • Is it an important differentiator in your industry?
  • Does it have a considerable impact on the way you work?
  • Is showcasing diversity a part of your brand values? Is your mission to expand opportunities for certain populations?

When in doubt, be yourself, show up authentically, and do good work. It goes a long way!

If you’re feeling hesitant, I get it. It’s hard to put yourself out there, especially if you’re one of few people of your identity in your industry. It can also be tricky figuring out how to go about it.

If you’re stuck, lean on your community. And know that we’re always here to help you navigate those questions.

You’ve got this,

Hazel

Every time we see Larry behind the counter, he makes a point to brighten our day, make us laugh, and treat us like we’re his only customers (which we’re definitely not). He serves the most delightful experience, not just a nice...

Hi Reader, I cleaned out my pantry for the first time in 14 years. (Pause for applause.) 👏 Maybe the chirping birds and sprouting buds put me in spring-cleaning mode. But I just hit a wall and couldn’t deal with the lack of organization any longer. Years of old cans and bags of snacks had piled up, and it was practically impossible to tell what was on each shelf. That meant we often restocked food items that were already in the pantry—which is the worst. So I decided it was high time for a...
